Incompatibility
Under alkaline conditions  , sulphur dioxide is converted to bisulphite and sulphite . In buffer solution sulphur dioxide reduces hydroxide ion concentrations due to formation of HSO3 and the solution becomes more acidic .

Uses
i)                    Sulphur dioxide has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties
ii)                   sulphur dioxide is used as preservative for food .
iii)                 it is also used as a fumigant and to disinfect equipment in the wine and food industries .
iv)                 In industry it is used for bleaching wood pulp .
v)                  A lotion is prepared from sulphur dioxide and glycerin is used to cure sore throat in cold , tonsillitis , and skin infections .

Side Effect
i)                    Sulphur dioxide is highly irritant to eye , skin and mucous membrane .
ii)                   Inhalation results in irritation of the respiratory tract .

It is stored in cylinders and usually packagesd under pressure in liquid form .
