3	Physical Property	Physical state Prismatic crystal or granular powder and almost opaque b y transmitted light . Colour Dark purple or almost  black Odour Odourless Taste Sweet with astringent Solubility Soluble in water ( 1 in 16 ) and in boiling water ( 1 in 3.5 ) Extra features – i) It is stable in air                           ii) It decomposes at about 240*c with evolution of                                  oxygen                          iii) It is decomposed by alcohol and many organic                                solvents and also concentrated by acids with                                 liberation  of oxygen

6	Uses	i)                    It acts as a disinfectant and deodorant . ii)                   It is also astringent , anti infective and bactericidal iii)                 Solutions are used to clean ulcers , abscesses , as wet dressing and in baths in eczematous conditions and acute dermatoses . iv)                 Solutions have also been used in bromhidrosis ( evil smelling perspiration ) , in myotic infection s such as athlet’s foot , in poison ivy dermatitis and a stomach wash-out in the treatment of poisoning by morphine , opium , and strychnine .
7	Side Effect	Crystals and concentrated solutions are caustic and irritant to tissues .Repeated use of dilute solution may cause corrosive burns
8	Storage	It is stored in air tight containers to avoid contact with organic matter .
